Description

New Mexico, 1886: Samuel Jones (Tommy Lee Jones) hat seine Familie vor Jahren im Stich gelassen, um mit den Apachen zu leben. Nun kehrt er nach Hause zurück, mit der Hoffnung, seiner Frau und seiner Tochter wieder etwas näher zu kommen. Doch wie sich herausstellt, ist seine Frau schon lange tot und seine inzwischen erwachsene Tochter Maggie (Cate Blanchett) hat weder Vergebung noch Zuneigung für ihn übrig. Als Maggies Tochter Lilly (Evan Rachel Wood) von einer brutalen Bande verschleppt wird, ist sie auf die Hilfe ihres entfremdeten Vaters angewiesen. In einem Wettlauf gegen die Zeit verfolgen sie gemeinsam die Spur der Entführer, die auf dem Weg zur mexikanischen Grenze sind und mit Lilly für immer zu verschwinden drohen.
