Mit The Outer Worlds kehrt Obsidian Entertainment zu seinen Wurzeln zurück: Die beiden Game Director Tim Cain und Leonard Boyarsky hoben 1997 mit Fallout einen absoluten Rollenspiel-Meilenstein aus der Taufe. The Outer Worlds weist viele optische und inhaltliche Ähnlichkeiten zur Fallout-Serie auf, setzt allerdings auf ein Science-Fiction-Szenario im Retro-Look statt auf die Postapokalypse als Setting. Das neue Obsidian-Rollenspiel nutzt die Unreal Engine 4 und hat wieder eine Ego-Perspektive in 3D; es knüpft damit nahtlos an Obsidians Hit Fallout: New Vegas an. Auch Elemente wie Multiple-Choice-Dialoge, schwarzer Humor und Entscheidungen sowie Fraktionen erinnern an frühere Obsidian-Titel.
