Lang bevor Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan) dank der Wettbewerbsserie „The Apprentice“ (2004-2015) landesweit bekannt war und schließlich 2017 gar zum Präsidenten der USA eingeschworen wird, folgte er den Fußstapfen seines Vaters Fred Trump (Martin Donovan) und führte die Geschäfte des Trump-Imperiums weiter. Gerade noch am Anfang seiner Karriere, fand er in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren einen wichtigen Verbündeten in Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong). Zwischen dem Anwalt und dem Millionärserben entwickelte sich eine Mentor-Mentee-Dynamik, die mehr als ein Jahrzehnt andauern würde. In dieser Zeit wird Cohn wiederholt zum sogenannten „Fixer“ für Trumps Eskapaden und Probleme, etwa wenn ihm Korruption vorgeworfen werden.
